The west coast of Canada — British Columbia — is a land of wonders. Not the least of those wonders are the great salmon runs nurtured by countless rivers and streams.

Sadly, as I mentioned in another post, many of those runs are endangered by climate change, overfishing, industrial salmon feedlots raising non-endemic species, and habitat degradation.

A visit to Goldstream Park always raises my spirits. Close as it is to the the Trans Canada Highway, the primeval forest and rushing waters, the salmon struggling upstream to spawn (then die), the wildlife that flock to gorge on the bounty … if you can ignore the traffic noise, this little creek is as beautiful as any on the north coast.

Mind you, a mid-week visit misses the crowds that flock to the park like seagulls on weekends.

One of the greatest benefits of Goldstream’s proximity to Victoria is its accessibility to district schools. There were hundreds of schoolchildren there today, a number of whom wanted to know about my camera gear. I was happy to let the most inquisitive look through the telephoto. Teachers thanked me for the “lesson.”
