Announcing a self-assigned 30-day photography challenge

Why and wherefore

Before I examine some of the newly-added Eighties Vancouver photographs individually (see under “Projects” above), beginning today, I will endeavour to make and post here 1 photograph a-day for 30 days, through November, rain or shine.

The exercise is meant as an antidote to living in the past, as I have been doing through “vintage” photos and accompanying stories for most of 2018.

That may seem sort of an ironic idea, seeing as the photographic process is all about the past — “capturing” (I hate that term as applied to photographs) moments like so many pinned butterflies — but the intention is to speed up the curation process from years to hours, even minutes.

I will, of course, make more than one image in the course of each day, and I may miss gems amongst them. But I’ll endeavour to cull and post-process results quickly and simply. As indicated by additions to aforementioned galleries, some pictures take time to “develop.” Look for those in a decade or so. 🙂

As far as technology goes, I’ll impose no restrictions other than using gear I already own. I might even mix in some film. However, I want the technical to take a back seat to the creative. Ultimately, this is meant as exercise for creative and physical muscle, forcing me out of the office. A related aim is to get out from in front of the screen, digital photography’s unhealthy equivalent to long days in the darkroom.

Along the way, I’ll likely use mobile apps both to process the day’s work and post to this blog. Those who believe a picture is worth a thousand words will welcome sparse editorial comment.

I hope you’ll join my journey into the nearly now, and please feel free to comment on the results. Posts will be scheduled for later each day.
