What’s new for 2021: Video production

I started my journey into video production a decade ago with the launch of my cycling-oriented YouTube channel, The VeloWeb and an Olympus CAMEDIA C-5060 Wide Zoom 5.1MP camera that could record video at a whopping 640 x 480 pixels.

I was surprised, however, that my most successful bike tutorials racked up a fair number of views and made some pocket money along the way. Since I’m no longer able to ride my bike thousands of kilometres a year and my interest in the subject has waned, VeloWeb (the website and YouTube channel) are moribund. My focus now is on this website and related YouTube channel, which is nearing the minimum of 1,000 subscribers needed for monetization (yes, the dreaded mid-roll ads!) 🙂

If you haven’t, please subscribe.

In fact, over the last year or so, the main focus of my digital imaging study has been directed at video production — which, I think it’s fair to say, is a greater challenge than still imaging, though perhaps that’s due to my aging synapses.

Regardless, I like a challenge and today’s advanced (not to mention expensive) filmmaking gear has revived a love of moving pictures that I first indulged in my early teens with my dad’s 8mm ciné camera and again in my twenties when I hauled a “Super 8” into the mountains.

Throughout this annus horribilis, movie making has helped me survive the boredom of COVID lockdown, critical health challenges and the loss of my mother.

In the coming year, I intend to stay calm and keep filming.
