30 Day Photo Challenge, Day 14: Invasion of the money plants

Picture of the day

Lunaria (money plants) invading Garry oak ecosystem

Who could deny the beauty of these iridescent pods, people? Backlit by the setting sun (at just past 3pm!), they seem to be lit from within. The effect is magnified amongst a copse of bare Garry oaks.

Unfortunately, money plants are interlopers in this isolated ecosystem. And these alien species are not alone. Notice the English ivy climbing up the oak on the left. All these likely came via cuttings thrown over nearby suburban fences — the meadow, like many on southern Vancouver Island is surrounded by development.

I hope I have honoured the effect of the moment in my editing (for the web). It is very difficult to process images so that they might display properly for the average display … because there is hardly an average for unprofiled screens. For example, editing on this iMac display will produce a very dark image on the notebook, even with the brightness turned up full. Even uploading to this website dulls down images, so it’s all really just a guessing game, albeit based on experience. Many people will have their devices set to auto-adjust, compounding the issue.
